An amended bill to exempt the French Quarter from the state's permitless-carry law is on its way to the full Senate for debate.

New Orleans leaders testified in favor of the bill as originally proposed, and were disappointed by the amendments.

The bill now requires people carrying a gun without a permit to tell police officers about it as needed, and bans permitless carry by an intoxicated person.

NOPD Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick and New Orleans City Council President Helena Moreno say the amended bill falls short.
