A new report finds the Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office has regressed in 14 areas.

The report by the federal monitor overseeing the consent decree governing the office and the Orleans Justice Center found that between October 1, 2022 and March 31, 2023 continued understaffing has held back training.

This has led to increased violence at the jail, with some housing units going unstaffed.

The report also questions whether the center's new warden, Dr. Astrid Birgden meets the educational requirements of the job.

In a statement, Sheriff Susan Hutson denied hearing any concerns about Birgden's qualifications.
