President Joe Biden is granting an emergency declaration for Southeast Louisiana over a saltwater intrusion that officials fear could impact the water supply in the region.

Drought-like conditions in the Midwest have slowed the flow of the Mississippi River, allowing salt water from the gulf to creep closer up-stream.

It's estimated that the gulf water could make its way to New Orleans water treatment plants by next month, and they cannot handle water with high salinity levels.

The Army Corps of Engineers is beginning work on a project this week that they say will help with the issue.
