The architect of the Saints' "Dome Patrol" defense is dead.

The team announced that Steve Sidwell passed away Wednesday at the age of 78.

Sidwell was the defensive coordinator of the Saints from 1986 to 1994, during which they led the league twice in fewest points allowed.

Head coach Dennis Allen said Sidwell's defense is still the standard for the Saints today.
