The City Council's public safety consultant says the New Orleans Police Department is about to have its fewest officers in more than 75 years.

Crime analyst Jeff Asher says the department reported 900 commissioned officers on Sunday, including 37 new recruits expected through the rest of this year.

Asher says the last time the force had fewer officers was in 1947, when there only 892 officers on the force.

He says that breaks down to about 243 officers for every 100,000 residents, the lowest ratio since 1969.
