Officials are reporting the death of a New Orleans police officer over the weekend after he was shot more than two years ago.

The St. Tammany Parish Coroner's Office stated on Monday afternoon that Trevor Abney died of complications from the gunshot wound. His death is classified as a homicide.

Abney was patrolling the French Quarter the Friday before Halloween 2020 when Donnell Hassell reportedly opened fire on him and his partner.

Hassell is awaiting trial on two counts of attempted first-degree murder.
