Federal investigators have been combing the site of a helicopter crash near Baton Rouge that took the life of two police pilots.

The FAA says the tail rotor struck a tree Sunday during a police chase.

The chopper apparently went down around 3 a.m., but nobody noticed for hours. Searchers found the wreckage in a sugarcane field on North Winterville Road off U-S 190 near Port Allen.

Federal investigators still want to know if the police aircraft had any mechanical issues that contributed to the crash.
