The New Orleans City Council is discussing the future of short-term rentals in the city.

Council members have until the end of March to decide whether to pass an ordinance requiring a homeowner, operator, or tenant to live on-site at all residential short-term rentals.

Earlier this month, the council voted to limit short-term rentals to one per square block.

In Tuesday's meeting, dozens of operators told a council committee the existing law needs to be enforced.

The Department of Safety and Permits suggested a lottery system for the awarding of new short-term rental permits, an idea that was strongly opposed.
