The New Orleans City Council is moving ahead with safeguards on police usage of facial recognition software as a crime-fighting tool after approving the use of the technology several weeks ago.

Council members voted unanimously on Thursday in favor of the new ordinance to put safeguards in place.

Mainly that involved calling for criminal court judges to approve the use of the technology.

Several people spoke out against using it at all, but most comments both in-person and online supported the council's action.
