U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana revealed Thursday he had tested positive for COVID-19.

A press release from his office said Cassidy took the test after learning Wednesday he had been in contact with someone who had the coronavirus.

Cassidy's office said the senator would follow all CDC recommendations, including a 14-day self-quarantine and informing those he's come into contact with recently about his positive test.

“I am strictly following the direction of our medical experts and strongly encourage others to do the same,” said Dr. Cassidy.

As of Thursday, the Louisiana Department of Health reported 140,821 cases of COVID-19 statewide, with 4,496 deaths. 1,087 are currently hospitalized with the coronavirus, with 178 patients on ventilators.
