The number of those hospitalized and on ventilators due to COVID-19 in Louisiana increased Friday, reversing a downward trend seen in recent days.

The Louisiana Department of Health reported 22 more patients in the hospital thanks to the coronavirus and 17 more on ventilators, bringing those counts to 1,546 and 222, respectively.

LDH also reported an additional 1,829 cases in Friday's update. After the daily removal of newly identified duplicates and out-of-state cases, the total number of reported cases in the state since the pandemic began stood at 116,280.

94% of the newly reported cases are blamed on community spread, with 32% involving those 29 years old and younger. The department says most of the cases were collected between July 24 and July 31.

The total death count from coronavirus is 3,835 and state health officials reported an additional 24 deaths.

More detailed information is available on LDH's online COVID-19 dashboard.

The next update from the state health department will be on Sunday.
