Police are warning car owners about an increase in vehicle thefts in St. Tammany and Tangipahoa parishes centered around specific car parts.

Officials said yesterday that had at least eight reports of catalytic converters and diesel exhaust filter parts being stolen from parked cars in Hammond in Tangipahoa and the nearby western part of St. Tammany.

Detectives say the thieves are stripping the vehicles for the expensive metals in the catalytic converter and the diesel parts which are easily sold on the black market.
