(WVUE/FOX 8) The wife of a former JPSO sergeant has been arrested and booked with his murder.

Sheriff Joseph Lopinto said Shantel Wagner, 35, of Waggaman, was booked with one count of second degree murder in the death of former Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office Sergeant Troy Smith, 44.

Wagner was booked into the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center Tuesday night.

According to Lopinto, on Father's Day around 11:25 p.m. deputies responded to the couple's home on Camellia Lane in Waggaman.

Wagner called 911 and said that her husband had attempted suicide by shooting himself in the head, according to the report.

Deputies found Smith in a bedroom suffering from a single gunshot wound to his head, according to Lopinto.

Smith was transported to an area hospital where he died from his injury.

Through a combination of interviews and forensic evidence processing, probable cause was established that Smith's injury was not self-inflicted, according to Lopinto.

Homicide investigators identified Wagner as a suspect in her husband's death and secured a warrant for her arrest, according to the report.
