Governor Edwards wants Louisiana to establish its own minimum wage.

He says the legislation is one part of a strategic plan to lift families out of poverty so they can get ahead and stay ahead. He says the federal minimum wage hasn't increased since 2009, while the cost of goods has gone up almost 35%.

He's supporting legislation authored by Senator Troy Carter that would put the minimum wage in Louisiana at $8.50 an hour, a buck and a quarter higher than the federal minimum.
