The loss of funding due to a failed tax measure is responsible for some severe cuts to the staff of the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Department.

Sheriff Randy Smith announced Wednesday his office would be cutting 13% of its employees after nearly 10% of the department's revenue is going away because of a sales tax not being renewed.

Sheriff Smith says there will be 35 layoffs of non-essential positions.
