District Attorney Leon Cannizzaro says he'd like to see State Police work in Orleans Parish permanently.

He says if state troopers for instance did traffic enforcement on the interstates and state highways within the city limits, that would free up officers in the NOPD's traffic division to work in areas of the city where police presence is needed.

"Why can't there be a greater presence in for instance places like the St. Roch neighborhood. Those people are entitled to have better protection, as are the people in Algiers, the French Quarter, the Marigny, Uptown, Downtown, every part of this city," Cannizzaro said Thursday on the Denny Schaffer Show.

Cannizzaro pointed out that the assignment of more than 50 state troopers to the city now through Labor Day has been extremely important in that those officers "have made a number of arrests, a number of narcotics arrests in the French Quarter on Bourbon Street."

"I think we have to implore and beg the governor to keep the state troopers in Orleans Parish. The people of this city are entitled to have police protection," Cannizzaro said.
