Common Core Town Hall Meeting Set For Tonight

The public will get an update on Common Core at a town hall meeting in New Orleans tonight.

The event, sponsored by the Urban League of Greater New Orleans and the Black Alliance for Educational Options, will be held from 6pm to 8pm at McDonogh 35 Senior High School, 1331 Kerelec Street.

A panel of elected officials and school leaders will be there to provide information and to answer questions about Common Core educational standards and their implementation in the state.

State Sen. Conrad Appel, a Republican from Metairie and chairman of the Senate Education Committee, is one of the panel members.

"I've been asked to talk about the implementation of Common Core in Louisiana and what can be done to make sure that it continues in a smooth fashion," Appel said.

Appel, a supporter of Common Core, has been critical of Gov. Bobby Jindal's actions to derail it.

"He really caused mass confusion in the education structure of Louisiana right at the beginning of the school year for goodness sakes! It really doesn't make any sense," Appel said.
