Cause Of Explo, Fire At Norco Diesel Plant Under Investigation

Posted Monday, August 4th 2014 @ 2am

Authorities are investigating the cause of an explosion at the Diamond Green Biodiesel plant in Norco Sunday night.

No one was injured in the explosion and a resulting fire that occurred around 9:30 p.m.  The plant processes cooking oil and other material into renewable diesel fuel.

The blast reportedly was felt as far away as Kenner.

The St. Charles Parish Emergency Operations Center reported that no protective actions needed to be taken by the public.  Air monitoring revealed no traces of anything harmful in the air.

"We haven't read anything that's elevated to the point that it's harmful to human health," says Greg Langley, spokesman for the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality, the agency that conducted air monitoring.

The production unit at the facility was shut down.

It took over two hours to fully extinguish the fire. The facility's own fire department fought the blaze.

"Each plant in St. Charles Parish actually has crews on scene. So those are the folks who were able to fight that fire last night," says Renee Simpson, spokeswoman for the parish.
